Fire at drone factory in Latvia

RIGA. Feb 8 (Interfax/BNS) - An Edge Autonomy drone factory caught fire in Marupe, Latvia, on Tuesday.

According to the State Fire and Rescue Service, the fire alert came from the plant in the Marupe district after 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Fire brigades arrived at the scene to face open flames, which were rapidly spreading and causing heavy smoke.

About 50 firemen, nine fire trucks, three ramps and a chemical truck, as well as a fire team of the Riga International Airport with a fire truck worked to extinguish the blaze.

The fire was contained after 7 p.m.

The two-story plant caught fire on 600 square meters, while products stored nearby were burning on 20 square meters. Doctors said that two people were hurt in the fire and taken to a hospital, while another person received assistance on site.

Preliminary investigation did not point to arson, but a criminal case was opened to identify the exact reasons for the incident, Latvian police spokesperson Madara Sersnova said.

The fire did substantial damage, the factory's Deputy Director Janis Vilmanis.
