Fire at Latvia drone factory extinguished

RIGA. Feb 8 (Interfax/BNS) - Firefighters successfully extinguished the fire at the Edge Autonomy drone factory caught fire in Marupe, Latvia, on Wednesday.

Firefighters finished working at the incident scene at 1:30 p.m., the Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service said.

As reported, emergency services were called to the fire site at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The fire was contained after 7 p.m., and the debris was cleared on Wednesday.

The two-story plant caught fire on 600 square meters, while products stored nearby were burning on 20 square meters.

Two people were hurt in the fire and taken to a hospital, while another person received medical assistance on site.

Preliminary investigation did not point to arson, but a criminal case was opened to identify the exact reasons for the incident, Latvian State Police spokesperson Madara Sersnova said.

The fire did substantial damage, the factory's deputy director Janis Vilmanis said.

Edge Autonomy, formerly known as UAV Factory, is a producer of UAV technologies, which are imported to almost 70 countries, including Ukraine. Founded in 2009, it is owned by the U.S. company Edge Autonomy Holdings, LLC.
