Stoltenberg does not see discussing transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine as priority

BRUSSELS. Feb 13 (Interfax) - NATO counties ought to focus first and foremost on the maintenance and repairs of the kinds of weapons that have already been supplied to Ukraine, while a possible transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine requires thorough consideration, the alliance's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

"We need to be extremely focused on ensuring that the platforms already delivered are working as they should [...] has the spare parts, has the maintenance, has the logistics" - a task that "requires enormous amount of deliveries every day," Stoltenberg said at a press conference in Brussels on Monday when asked whether he supports the idea of handing over fighter jets to Ukraine.

Stoltenberg said he believes it is important at the moment to focus on the transfer of weapons, for instance armored hardware, that Ukraine will be able to use in the near future.

When commenting on fighter planes, the NATO secretary general said that "of course it is important [for the allies] to discuss new systems" that could be provided.
