Azerbaijani FM, U.S. assistant secretary of state discuss Baku-Yerevan negotiating process

BAKU. Feb 15 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and United States Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried discussed the situation in the South Caucasus and prospects of the negotiating process between Baku and Yerevan in a telephone call on Wednesday.

"The parties discussed the current situation in the region and prospects of negotiations on a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

Bayramov said that, "in line with the trilateral statement, Azerbaijan guarantees the security of the movement of people, transport vehicles, and cargo via the Lachin road, but Armenia is taking advantage of the Lachin road for unlawful economic activities, the rotation of Armenian troops, and the transportation of mines."

Bayramov told Donfried that "the lawful demands by the protesters on the Lachin road have still not been met," while the "statements on the 'tense humanitarian' situation in the region are absolutely unwarranted," the ministry said.

The parties also exchanged opinions on other bilateral and regional matters of mutual interest, it said.
