MOSCOW. March 2 (Interfax) - The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has reported the detention of a Komsomolsk-on-Amur resident who initiated contact with the Ukrainian military to provide information about Russian Defense Ministry facilities in the region.
"The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation stopped the unlawful activities of a Komsomolsk-on-Amur resident, who is suspected of high treason," the FSB said.
According to the FSB, the detained man "himself contacted online a representative of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate in order to pass information about military facilities of the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation in the Khabarovsk Territory. The information could be used to stage sabotage and terrorist acts and deliver strikes with precision-guided weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles on sites where military hardware is loaded and stored as well as on its travel routes."
The FSB investigative department has opened a criminal case on high treason charges.
The man may face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.
The FSB has declined to disclose the suspect's identity or offer other details of the operation.
