Azerbaijani president says UNSC should be broadened

BAKU. March 2 (Interfax) - The UN Security Council is inefficient and needs a reform, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.

"There is yet another important issue the whole world has been discussing for years: these are reforms of the UN system. The UN Security Council is a remnant of the past, which does not reflect the current reality. The UN Security Council is inefficient today. The Security Council should be expanded to become more representative and geographically more just," Aliyev said at a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement's Contact Group in response to Covid-19 in Baku on Thursday.

One permanent seat on the reformed UN Security Council should be assigned to the chairperson of the Non-Aligned Movement, Aliyev said. He proposed that members of the Non-Aligned Movement begin respective consultations.

Aliyev supported the idea that one permanent seat on the UN Security Council be given to Africa.

"The new world order is being transformed," Aliyev said. "The world is currently witnessing the most serious confrontation between the East and the West since the end of the Cold War. This confrontation has palpable consequences for the rest of the world. [...] We are observing an increasing number of violations of the sovereignty and territorial integrity and interference in domestic affairs of states," he said.
