Georgia does not need foreign agent laws - U.S. ambassador in Tbilisi

TBILISI. March 10 (Interfax) - U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan has reiterated that Georgia does not need foreign agent laws.

"The people of Georgia, especially students and young people, spoke loud and clear, and the ruling party finally listened. Now we all want to see every single Member of Parliament click on the red button and reject these laws formally," the ambassador said in a commentary published by the Georgian embassy in Tbilisi.

"Georgia does not need these laws. There are already ample protections and transparency to ensure that all of the financial assistance flowing into Georgia is being used for Georgia's best interests," Degnan said.

"The people of Georgia now want to see their government fulfill its pledge to achieve European Union candidate status," she said.

"I hope that all of the energy and attention will go towards this," Degnan said.

Thousands protested against the foreign agent bill in Tbilisi on March 7 and 8, and clashes with the police occurred. The Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia ruling party revoked the bill in the morning of March 9.

The Georgian parliament voted down the foreign agent bill at a plenary meeting on Friday, thus formally revoking this document.

The meeting was held within minutes, and no comment was made.
