Russia acts as main mediator in Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization talks - Armenian parliamentary speaker

YEREVAN. March 20 (Interfax) - Moscow plays the principal role as a mediator in negotiations between Yerevan and Baku on settling relations between them, Armenian parliamentary speaker Alen Simonyan said.

"Options for a peace agreement [between Armenia and Azerbaijan] have been communicated mainly through Russia, which plays the principal mediating role in the negotiations. But there have also been initiatives on the part of the United States, which is very active, as well as on France's part," Simonyan told journalists on Monday.

Armenia has always agreed to Russia's proposals on settling the Karabakh conflict and normalizing Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, he said.

"Armenia has always accepted all proposals that have been made by Russia to date. The problem has been Azerbaijan's disagreement. The Russian Foreign Ministry should pay attention to Azerbaijan's response, as Armenia has given its consent to Russia's proposals in 99% of cases," Simonyan said.

He also mentioned "quite a high level of an escalation threat."

"But it would be wrong to say that the peace process has reached an impasse, as, after all, there is a process that is moving ahead. Regardless of anything, Armenia has been working on a daily basis to enhance the level of its defense capability," he said.
