Lavrov urges UN to realize role in combating terrorism in context of probe into Nord Stream blast

SOCHI. March 23 (Interfax) - Moscow insists on the need for international organizations, primarily the United Nations, to arrange a fair and impartial investigation into the blasts on the Nord Stream gas pipelines, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"We do hope that, after all, international organizations, primarily the UN, will realize their responsibility for maintaining international peace and security and combating terrorism, especially terrorism that undermined and destroyed a critical infrastructure element that played a decisive role in the EU's energy security," Lavrov told journalists on Thursday.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has repeatedly urged the EU countries to help shed some light on the situation but has not received any response, Lavrov said. "I think those countries would be happy to see a solution for which we have a Russian expression that says 'hiding the loose ends in the water'," Lavrov said.

Russia has submitted a draft resolution with the UN Security Council requesting "an impartial, unbiased, and transparent investigation involving a broad range of international experts," Lavrov said.

"The People's Republic of China supports us, while the Americans reacted very nervously, and I'd even say their behavior looks like panic fear," Lavrov said.
