TBILIISI. March 23 (Interfax) - Georgia had no reported instances of violation of international anti-Russian sanctions in 2022 thanks to tightened control by the customs department, Georgian Minister of Finance Lasha Khutsishvili said.
"I want to ask everyone not to make false allegations accusing our checkpoints of allegedly allowing sanctioned goods to pass," Khutsishvili told parliament on Thursday.
Georgia's radical opposition is accusing the government, without concrete evidence, of letting large quantities of internationally-sanctioned goods cross into Russia from Georgia.
At the Kazbegi checkpoint, additional equipment, including X-ray scanners, was installed and technical capacity increased at other checkpoints to ensure proper control, Khutsishvili said.
Over the past year, customs officers have made over 1,000 decisions to prevent banned goods from passing through Georgian territory, the minister said.
