People willing to renounce their Ukrainian citizenship may do so via Gosuslugi website, Russian Interior Ministry from June

MOSCOW. March 23 (Interfax) - People willing to renounce their Ukrainian citizenship will be able to do so by submitting relevant documents to the branches of the Russian Interior Ministry and via the Gosuslugi state services platform starting from this summer, the Interior Ministry's press center said.

"After the federal law takes effect on June 17, 2023, people who no longer want to hold Ukrainian citizenship will be able to apply to any territorial branch of the Russian Interior Ministry or submit their applications via the Unified Portal of state and municipal services (functions)," the press center told reporters.

This law will allow "absolutely all citizens of the Russian Federation who have Ukrainian citizenship to submit an application to the effect that they are unwilling to hold Ukrainian citizenship," it said.

"They will be considered as no longer holding Ukrainian citizenship from the day when they submit the aforementioned application. It will allow them to get employed by state and municipal agencies, attend educational institutions that envisage access to state secrets," the press center said.

This option was previously only available to residents of Crimea, the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, it said.

The Interior Ministry will determine the procedure for submitting such applications, will compile a list of documents to accompany them and will decide on the application's form.

On March 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a bill on the specifics of the legal status of Russian citizens who have Ukrainian citizenship. It envisages creating a mechanism whereby a Russian citizen who has a Ukrainian passport will be able to submit an application seeking the annulment of Ukrainian citizenship. Such persons will be recognized as no longing holding Ukrainian citizenship as soon as they submit this application.
