BRUSSELS. March 23 (Interfax) - The European Union has agreed to plans to supply Kiev with one million artillery shells over the next 12 months, the European Council said in a document after discussing Ukraine at an EU summit on Thursday.
"Taking into account the security and defense interests of all Member States, the European Council welcomes the agreement in the Council to urgently deliver ground-to-ground and artillery ammunition to Ukraine and, if requested, missiles, including through joint procurement and the mobilization of appropriate funding," the document said.
In particular, the European Peace Facility (EPF) will fund the joint effort to provide one million artillery munitions over the next 12 months without harming the security and defense polices of certain member states, it said.
In addition, the EU has reiterated its willingness to provide Ukraine with economic, military and humanitarian assistance for as long as necessary.
The EU also will continue to support Moldova, in particular on security, economy and energy supply "in the face of destabilizing activities by external actors," the document said.
Further, the Council took note of the Black Sea Grain Initiative extension which it says will bolster international food security.
Earlier, when asked if EU leaders would make a decision on a plan EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell announced after a meeting of EU foreign-affairs and defense ministers on March 20 to supply Ukraine with one million of projectiles over the next 12 months, a high-ranking EU official reminded that the European council is not a legislature and does not adopt such official acts.
The summit will give a kind of agreement with such a decision that is formally adopted by the Council of the EU and discuss how to fund the resolution, the EU functionary said.
