Moscow to take countermeasures to mitigate threats from Finland's accession to NATO - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. April 4 (Interfax) - Moscow will take countermeasures following Finland's accession to NATO, and the specific steps taken will depend on the terms of Finnish integration into the alliance, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"The Russian Federation will have to take military, technical and other countermeasures to mitigate threats to national security arising in connection with Finland's accession to NATO," the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Specific steps in the development of defenses on Russia's northwestern borders will depend on the specific terms of the country's integration into the North Atlantic Alliance, including the deployment of NATO military infrastructure and offensive weapons on its territory," the statement said.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said earlier on Tuesday that the alliance would not deploy troops from other member states in Finland without Helsinki's consent.
