Russian military practices locating enemy submarines in Barents Sea

MOSCOW. April 11 (Interfax) - A search and strike team from the Kola Combined-Arms Flotilla has begun an exercise to detect mock enemy submarines in the Barents Sea, the press service for the Russian Northern Fleet said on Tuesday.

"For a number of days, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) ships will train for joint operations as part of a search and strike team, and also practice searching, detecting and tracking a mock enemy submarine using the full range of their hydro-acoustic weapons," the press service said.

The team comprises the Snezhnogorsk and Brest ASW ships, it said.

The strike team is opposed by submarines from the Northern Fleet as part of the bilateral exercise, the press service said.

The ASW ships will interact with ASW planes from the Northern Fleet's Air Force and Air Defense Forces at certain stages of the exercise, it said.

This is a scheduled exercise, it said.

The Albatross-class ASW ships are armed with AK-176M and AK-630M artillery and air defense systems, RBU rocket launchers, torpedo tubes and advanced hydro-acoustic systems, and are designed to protect waters and fight submarines in coastal waters, the press service said.
