Azerbaijan, Armenia claim military casualties in border shootout

BAKU/YEREVAN. April 11 (Interfax) - The Defense Ministries of Azerbaijan and Armenia have both claimed dead and injured as a result of a skirmish on the joint border on Tuesday.

"As a result of the provocation committed by the opposing [Armenian] side, the Azerbaijan Army's servicemen became Shehids [martyrs] and were wounded," the Azerbaijani ministry said in a statement.

"The Azerbaijan Army Units are taking adequate retaliatory measures," it said.

Earlier, the ministry reported an Armenian attack on Azerbaijani military positions on the border on Tuesday.

"On April 11, the Armenian armed forces units from the positions in the direction of the Digh settlement of the Gorus region using small arms subjected to intensive fire the Azerbaijan Army's opposing positions stationed in the direction of the Lachin region [on the joint border]," the ministry said.

Meanwhile, Armenia's Defense Ministry blamed Azerbaijan for the skirmish.

"At around 4 p.m. on April 11, Azerbaijan's Armed Forces units opened fire in the direction of members of Armenia's Armed Forces who were carrying out engineering work in the direction of the village of Tegh in Armenia's Syunik region on the border with Azerbaijan. The Armenian side resorted to retaliatory action," the ministry said in a statement.

Initial reports suggest there are dead and injured on the Armenian side as a result of this incident.
