Kursk resident holding dual Russian-Ukrainian citizenship found guilty of spying, jailed for 15 years

KURSK. April 12 (Interfax) - The Kursk Regional Court handed down a sentence on Wednesday in the espionage case of a 41-year-old Kursk resident holding dual Russian-Ukrainian citizenship, the united judicial press service of the Kursk region said.

"The sentence is 15 years of imprisonment in a high-security penitentiary and a fine of 200,000 rubles," the press service said.

The man was found guilty of espionage and collusion in the attempted illegal sale of an especially large amount of narcotic substances, with a total mass of over 2.9 kilograms, by a group of individuals.

No details of the crime committed by the individual were provided at the court. He pleaded not guilty to the crimes he was charged with.

The Kursk regional branch of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) conducted a preliminary investigation in the case.

In late August 2022, the FSB reported the detention of a Ukrainian citizen, who according to the FSB was an agent of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Defense Ministry of Ukraine. He was detained on suspicion of being involved in gathering and passing on information about facilities of the Russian Defense Ministry on orders from the foreign intelligence service for the purpose of using this information against the security of the Russian Federation.

It was also reported that special-purpose technical equipment supplied by the Ukrainian special services was seized from the suspect's place of residence. In addition, specialized literature dedicated to sniper training, survival techniques, guerrilla warfare, reconnaissance and sabotage activities, and the work of special services was found on his personal computer and mobile phone.
