Putin orders significant increase in satellite production, expansion of satellite launches for Arctic exploration

MOSCOW. April 12 (Interfax) - Russia will increase automated spacecraft launches for the exploration of the Arctic, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"We must increase launches of automated spacecraft for the exploration of our Arctic region, establish a national satellite monitoring system for carbon content in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences, [and] study the potential of our forests [and] other natural ecosystems to absorb greenhouse gases from the atmosphere," Putin said at an event devoted to Cosmonautics Day on Wednesday.

It is necessary to considerably increase satellite production, he said.

The creation of powerful satellite groups is aimed at ensuring high-quality navigation and communication, including satellite data transmission, he said.

"This will allow for the broader use of remote Earth sensing, primarily for exploration and the advancement of our huge territories, for the development of unmanned transport, [and] for the solution of global issues associated with environmental and climate change," the president said.

In order to solve these problems, it is necessary to strengthen interaction within the space sector between the state, business, and science, he said.
