MOSCOW. April 17 (Interfax) - A Chinese military delegation led by Defense Minister Li Shangfu visited the Russian General Staff Academy on Monday during an official visit to Russia.
"The guests familiarized themselves with the structure of the higher military educational establishment, its training and physical infrastructure, how teaching is organized, and specific aspects of training for foreign servicemen," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
"The Russian Defense Ministry supported the possible increase in students from China to be trained by the Academy's special faculty," the ministry said.
"Over 20 senior officers from China will be enrolled on higher academic courses this fall," it said.
Li thanked "the Russian General Staff Academy for training Chinese students since 1966," the ministry said.
He noted that Academy graduates hold high-ranking positions in the People's Liberation Army of China.
"People's Liberation Army officers studying at the General Staff Academy will have the greatest representation among servicemen of foreign armies," the statement said.
Li is currently paying an official visit to Russia. This is his first foreign trip since his appointment as China's defense minister. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu will hold negotiations with his Chinese counterpart during the visit.
