Court gives life imprisonment to ISIL leader who prepared terrorist attacks in Russian cities

MOSCOW. April 17 (Interfax) - A military court has sentenced a Tajik citizen, one of leaders of the ISIL terrorist organization that is banned in Russia, to life in prison for preparing terrorist attacks in the Moscow region and Novosibirsk, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Monday.

Under the court's ruling, the man was found guilty of 21 crimes stipulated by the Russian Criminal Code, namely, organization and involvement in terrorist activities, illegal acquisition, storage or possession of weapons, munitions and explosive substances, and illegal production of explosive substances and explosive devices.

He "was sentenced to life in prison and was fined 1.5 million rubles," the FSB said.

The sentence has entered into force.

According to the FSB, the citizen of Tajikistan and one of the leaders of ISIL, "created a terrorist cell for the purpose of carrying out sabotage and terrorist acts in the Moscow region and in Novosibirsk, using improvised explosive devices that he planned to blow up in crowded areas, including RZD facilities."

"To commit the planned crimes, the leader recruited citizens of Tajikistan to join cells of the international terrorist organization ISIL, and also organized the illegal production, acquisition and storage of explosive devices, firearms and munitions," the FSB said.

Due to cooperation with the FSB's foreign partners, the convict was identified and detained in Syria and then taken to Russia.

"During operational activities, the terrorists involved in the cell were detained and prosecuted. The activities of this terrorist cell were thus stopped," the FSB said.
