Russian submarine performs electronic missile launches in Black Sea

MOSCOW. April 19 (Interfax) - The Stary Oskol diesel-electric submarine has performed electric missile launches in the Black Sea, the press service for the Russian Black Sea Fleet said.

"The submarine has trained the sequence of actions together with ground surveillance systems in a missile strike on the enemy's surface ships at a maritime range in the Black Sea. Missile launches were electronically simulated," the press service said.

"At the next stage of the exercise, the sub will practice evading enemy anti-submarine aircraft and surface ships," it said.

The Stary Oskol is the third of six diesel-electric submarines of Project 636.3 built for the Black Sea Fleet at the Admiralty Shipyards of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC). The sub completed trials and relocated from Polyarny in the Murmansk region to Sevastopol in summer 2016.

Submarines of the series have repeatedly fired Kalibr missiles at terrorists in Syria from the Mediterranean. Kalibr is a family of Russian cruise missiles developed by the Novator Design Bureau of Almaz-Antey.
