RIGA. April 19 (Interfax/BNS) - Latvian President Egils Levits announced plans to run for re-election after a meeting with Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins, the BNS agency said on Wednesday.
The National Alliance nominated Levits for president on April 17, but it was waiting for the president to make his own decision, BNS said.
United List founder Uldis Pilens has also said he will stand in the presidential election. Besides United List, he is supported by a number of opposition politicians, but this does not guarantee a solid majority for him in the election, BNS said.
According to BNS, Levits does not have enough votes to be re-elected either, as the opposition United List has nominated its own candidate. For now, only New Unity has pledged support for the incumbent president if he is nominated by the National Alliance.
The Latvian parliament will elect the country's next president on May 31.
