Azerbaijani FM, U.S. State Department official discuss normalization of Azerbaijani-Armenian relations

BAKU. April 20 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State overseeing policy for Southern Europe and the Caucasus Erika Olson on Thursday, the parties discussed the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

"Bayramov and Olson discussed bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the United States, the current situation in the South Caucasus, and steps taken to normalize relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia," the ministry said.

Bayramov noted that Baku had initiated the normalization of relations with Yerevan, including the signing of a peace agreement, and was interested in the effectiveness of the peace process.

"At the same time, the minister informed Olson of Armenia's actions to derail the process, in particular the fact that Yerevan has failed to respond to Baku's latest proposals on the text of the peace agreement for six weeks, as well as a number of provocative statements and actions undertaken by Armenia," the statement said.

"Bayramov also stressed the importance of implementing the agreements reached between the parties to ensure a lasting peace and security in the region," the Foreign Ministry said.

For her part, Olson noted the importance of establishing peace and stability in the region and stressed the need to sign a peace agreement.

"She noted that the U.S. is always ready to support these talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia on a bilateral basis," it said.

The parties also exchanged views on other bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest at the meeting.
