NATO sec gen expects Georgia to expedite reforms

BRUSSELS. April 25 (Interfax) - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has expressed the hope that Georgia would intensify efforts on its domestic reforms and uphold democratic standards.

"I count on Georgia to redouble efforts on domestic reforms, and uphold democratic standards," Stoltenberg said following a meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday, adding that Georgia can count on NATO's continued support. His statement was published on NATO's website.

At the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008, its member states supported Ukraine and Georgia's aspiration to join the alliance. Stoltenberg repeatedly said that to that end, NATO supports and assists the countries on their path towards further Euro-Atlantic integration with reforms and practical and political support. NATO has not named the exact deadline of such expansion.
