A third of Russians favor retaliation against Finland's NATO accession, 47% say this is unnecessary - Public Opinion Foundation

MOSCOW. April 27 (Interfax) - A third of Russians, or 34%, believe that Moscow should retaliate against Finland's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance, the Public Opinion Foundation said in a statement on its website.

The share reaches 41% among respondents older than 60, the pollster said.

In turn, 47% of respondents said this is unnecessary, and 19% were undecided.

Those supporting retaliation suggest enhancing security on the border with Finland, deploying troops along the border, and developing economic measures against Helsinki, the Public Opinion Foundation said.

More than a third of Russians, or 37%, believe that Finland's NATO membership increases the risk of conflict between Russia and the alliance. This share nears 50% among respondents aged 60 and over. Forty-two percent believe it changes nothing, and 21% are undecided.

The Public Opinion Foundation polled 1,500 respondents aged 18 and over in 104 localities in 53 regions of Russia on April 14-16, 2023.

Finland formally joined NATO on April 4. The Finnish-Russian border is around 1,300 kilometers long.
