Russian Navy commander unveils plans for construction of new diesel subs

ST. PETERSBURG. April 27 (Interfax) - Russia will continue to reinforce its Navy by providing it with Project 636.3 diesel submarines, Navy Commander Nikolai Yevmenov said.

"Submarines of this project will continue to be built. They have a great future," Yevmenov said at the Admiralty Shipyards enterprise in St. Petersburg on Thursday following a ceremony for floating out the Project 636.3 Mozhaisk diesel submarine, built for the Pacific Fleet.

"The fleets will receive more vessels. Submarine divisions and brigades will be increased in terms of submarine numbers," he said.

"This series is very successful. Our partners, our friends have a very good opinion of these submarines. That is why, the submarine has enormous potential in terms of modernization and image," he said.

The experience gained during the special military operation in Ukraine is being used during the construction of submarines, Yevmenov said.

"We are accumulating the experience of the special military operation. All developments on submarines that are taking part in hostilities are being put into practice," he said.

The construction of the project's first six diesel-electric submarines for the Russian Black Sea Fleet was completed in 2016.

A series of Project 636.3 diesel submarines for the Pacific Fleet is currently under construction.

"Before 2024, the Russian Navy plans to receive the whole series of six Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines currently under construction at the Admiralty Shipyard specially for the submarine forces of the Pacific Fleet," Yevmenov said in August 2021.

Yevmenov said on May 18, 2021 that the Russian Baltic Fleet would receive new diesel-powered submarines as NATO boosts its presence in the region. The Navy commander did not say at the time whether the new diesel submarines would be Project 636.3 or Project 677 (Lada) ones.

Project 636.3 submarines carry Kalibr cruise missiles, developed by the Novator Design Bureau and manufactured by JSV Almaz-Antey.

The tactical and technical properties of Project 636.3 submarines are as follows: cruising autonomy - 45 days, maximum diving depth - 300 meters, diving range at economical speed - 400 miles, cruising range in the engine operation under water mode with an enhanced fuel supply at a speed of 7 knots - 7,500 miles, number of torpedo tubes - 6, underwater speed - 18 knots. A Project 636.3 submarine is operated by a 52-member crew.
