Russia will have to respond in case of U.S. military bases deployment in Finland - foreign ministry

MOSCOW. May 3 (Interfax) - Russia will have to respond to the possible deployment of U.S. military bases in Finland, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

"We confirm that the Russian Federation will have to take military-technical and other response measures in order to neutralize threats to our national security that will emerge because of that," Zakharova said.

Russia's concrete steps on its northwestern border will depend on the deployment of military infrastructure and strike weapon systems of NATO in the territory of Finland, she said.

In Russia's opinion, Finland's plans to sign an agreement that would allow the United States to place its military bases in Finnish territory indicate that Finland is losing its sovereignty, Zakharova said.

"Both Finland itself and NATO should understand that pumping the north of Europe with troops will only serve to heighten military-political tensions already in this region," Zakharova said.
