Chisinau, Bucharest discuss Moldovan army's modernization

CHISINAU. May 3 (Interfax) - Moldovan leaders and Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tilvar have discussed options for modernizing Moldova's National Army, the Moldovan presidential press service said on Wednesday.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu thanked Romania "for the considerable contribution offered to help improve the logistics system of the National Army," the press service said.

"Our institutions are working to preserve peace and democracy in Moldova, and Romania is a strategic partner with which we cooperate consistently with the aim of strengthening defense potential and national security," Sandu said.

Moldovan Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, in turn, briefed Tilvar on how Moldova's authorities are responding to the current situation.

"We have doubled the defense budget this year. We are fully determined to earmark financing for further investments in the army," Grosu said.

Tilvar said earlier that "Romania supports Moldova's army reform initiative and favors the development of cooperation between the agencies."
