Turkey able to hold transparent, democratic election, prevent any illegal actions - Peskov

MOSCOW. May 15 (Interfax) - Moscow has no doubt that the Turkish presidential election will be democratic and transparent and no unrest will be allowed to happen, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Journalists asked Peskov on Monday whether the Kremlin was expecting "a Turkish Maidan" to happen before and after the runoff election. "Turkey is a mature democracy, a strong sovereign country that is obviously capable of holding a transparent, democratic election, a transparent one, and of preventing any illegal actions from happening," he said.

The Daily Sabah newspaper said on Monday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had gained 49.36% of the vote, compared to 44.99% gained by his chief rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, after 99% of votes cast had been counted on Sunday.

The incumbent president therefore received the backing of more than 26.7 million voters, compared to over 24.3 million who voted for Kilicdaroglu. The third presidential candidate, Sinan Ogan, won more than 2.8 million votes, or 5.21%.

With 98.96% of votes counted in the parliamentary elections, Erdogan's People's Alliance has a strong lead, with 49.32% of the vote. The opposition Nation Alliance made up of six parties has gained about 35.17% of the vote. The Labor and Freedom Alliance ranks third, with 10.05% of the vote. Another 2% of the vote was won by further two alliances overall.

Voter turnout reached 87%.
