MOSCOW. May 15 (Interfax) - Moscow will respect the choice made by the Turkish people in the election and hopes for a further broadening of cooperation between Moscow and Ankara, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"We and the Turkish Republic are united by a very broad range of mutually advantageous cooperation in various areas, including energy, tourism, trade, agriculture, road and air transportation, and so on. This cooperation, which is genuinely mutually advantageous, absolutely meets the interests of the peoples of Turkey and Russia. This is why, of course, we are currently monitoring the news coming from Turkey with great interest. We respect and will respect the choice of the Turkish people." Peskov said at a press briefing on Monday.
"In any case, we hope that our cooperation will continue and become broader," he said.
Journalists asked Peskov on Monday whether the Kremlin was expecting "a Turkish Maidan" to happen before and after the runoff election. "Turkey is a mature democracy, a strong sovereign country that is obviously capable of holding a transparent, democratic election, a transparent one, and of preventing any illegal actions from happening," he said.
