YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. May 16 (Interfax) - Air defense missile systems helped repel a mock enemy air attack during an exercise held on the Kuril Islands, the Russian Eastern Military District's press service said on Tuesday.
"A routine air defense exercise involving S-300V4 units stationed on the Kuril Islands was conducted in the Eastern Military District," the press service said.
During the drills, on-duty air defense forces were alerted "to a simulated violation of Russia's airspace by a group of aircraft".
S-300V4 surface-to-air missile systems detected, identified and started to track the airborne targets, after which training (electronic) missile launches were carried out on several dozen airborne targets, successfully "destroying" them.
As part of the, personnel also practiced prompt data exchanges within the military district's unified air defense system, the press service said.
The S-300V4, one of Russia's most powerful air defense systems, was first delivered to the Eastern Military District's missile unit in the Far East in 2020, it said.
