MOSCOW. May 17 (Interfax) - The Chinese peace initiative for Ukraine reflects objective reality and the importance of agreeing on essential, systemic issues, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.
"If you look closely at the Chinese twelve-point initiative, you will see that the main points of their stance are of a systemic, global nature. It's necessary to respect the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety and inseparable interconnections, without any double standards, and to affirm on a global scale the principle of indivisible security for all states, which includes the inadmissibility of unilateral sanctions that are not envisaged by the UN Charter," Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow.
The Chinese position is based on "an understanding that the events unfolding in Ukraine are a mere reflection of the crises that have accumulated in global politics and the global economy because of Western actions aimed at hindering the objective process of the formation of a multipolar world order," he said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously emphasized that there were several provisions of the Chinese initiative which Moscow was ready to accept as a basis, Lavrov said. "This is a reflection of objective reality, which consists in the fact that in order to end such crises like the one created by the West in Ukraine, it would be necessary to agree on essential, systemic things. Above all, the UN Charter and the sovereign equality of states," he said.
