Ukrainian Supreme Court chairman's powers terminated over corruption charges

MOSCOW. May 17 (Interfax) - The judges of Ukraine's Supreme Court have expressed no confidence in Supreme Court Chairman Vsevolod Knyazev and terminated his powers in light of his apparent involvement in corruption, Ukrainian media reported.

The decision was made at a Supreme Court plenary session on Tuesday, which was broadcast live on the court's YouTube channel.

The decision on the "early termination of the Supreme Court chairman's powers due to the expression of no confidence in him" was supported by 140 of the 142 judges present at the session in a secret ballot.

The Supreme Court Plenum endorsed the vote's outcome.

The participants also decided that Judge Dmitry Luspenik, who has the longest record of service for a member of the Supreme Court, would temporarily perform the duties of its chairman.

Ukrainian media reported that the Special Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office officially notified Knyazev and his lawyer that it was treating them as suspects in the acceptance of a $2.7-million bribe.
