Russian Northern Fleet's fighter jets hold firing exercise in the Arctic

MOSCOW. May 22 (Interfax) - Pilots from the Separate Shipborne Fighter Jet Regiment of the Russian Northern Fleet's Air Force and Air Defense Army have trained firing air-to-air missiles at the Timur range, the fleet press service said in a statement.

"During the flight, MiG-29K aircraft arrived at the designated area and hit airborne targets of the mock enemy with short-range missiles. The shipborne aircraft also trained firing artillery, a 30mm aircraft gun, at airborne targets," the statement said.

The flights and the missile launches were performed in an area precisely designated for the firing exercise: above a maritime range of the Northern Fleet.

"Before the training began, full security of aircraft and surface ships was provided. For the period of the firing exercise, the maritime range was declared temporarily dangerous for aircraft and ships," the statement said.

As the scheduled exercise was completed, fighter jets returned to base in the Murmansk region, it said.
