Ukrainian drones attack Russia's Belgorod region overnight, cause no casualties - governor

BELGOROD. May 24 (Interfax) - Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Russia's Belgorod region, has reported a massive drone attack in the early hours of Wednesday, but said there were no casualties.

"The night was not so quiet. There was a great number of attacks by unmanned aerial vehicles. Air defense coped with most of them, but damage was done to Belgorod, the Borisovka district and the Belgorod district. Cars, private homes and administrative buildings were hit. We are finalizing door-to-door inspections, after which I will have more precise information. Most importantly, there are absolutely no casualties," Gladkov said on Telegram.

Ukrainian drones also attacked Tomarovka in the Yakovlevo urban district.

"Drones dropped bombs twice on two administrative buildings in Tomarovka last night. There were no fires or casualties. The roof of one building was damaged, while the second building sustained damage to its roof and floor. All services are [working] at the site, and the damage is being fixed," he said.

He later reported that a bomb was dropped by a drone in the Shebekino urban district.

"A drone dropped a bomb in Novaya Tavolzhanka; it exploded over a private house. There are no casualties or damage," Gladkov said.

Bomb experts and response services are working at the scene, he said.

The border territories of the Belgorod region have sporadically come under attack from Ukraine since February 24, 2022. There have been civilian casualties. The region has declared a yellow (high) level of terrorist alert and a state of emergency in 15 settlements along the border.
