CHISINAU. May 25 (Interfax) - The Moldovan parliament has allowed the country's security service officials to have citizenship of any country of the European Union. The change is stipulated by amendments to the law on the status of Information and Security Service officers.
The amendments were supported by 53 MPs of the ruling coalition, the Party of Action and Solidarity (which has 101 MPs), while the opposition believes dual citizenship is unacceptable for security service officials.
Moldovan legislation permits dual citizenship. All attempts made by the opposition to ban this status for public servants have failed. Moldovan President Maia Sandu, almost all MPs of the ruling party and members of the government, as well as a large number of opposition politicians now also have Romanian citizenship. According to official data, more than one million of Moldova's 2.5 million citizens have Romanian citizenship.
