Russia scrambles Sukhoi fighters to shadow two U.S. strategic bombers over Baltic Sea

MOSCOW. May 25 (Interfax) - Russia scrambled fighter aircraft on Thursday to make sure that United States bombers did not violate its airspace in the vicinity of the Baltic Sea.

"On May 25, 2023, Russian airspace monitoring systems detected two aerial targets approaching the Russian Federation's border over the Baltic Sea. Sukhoi Su-35S and Su-27P fighters were scrambled to prevent a violation of the Russian Federation's border," the Russian National Defense Control Center said on Thursday.

"The crews of the Russian fighters identified the aerial targets as two U.S. Air Force B-1B strategic bombers," it said.

After the foreign warplanes diverted away from the border, the Russian fighters returned to their base airfield, it said.

"The flight of the Russian fighters strictly complied with international rules for the use of airspace. No violation of Russia's border was permitted," it said.
