WASHINGTON. May 25 (Interfax) - The American army cannot currently confirm whether Ukrainian forces used U.S.-supplied weapons for strikes on Russian territory, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley said on Thursday.
"I can't say with definitive accuracy right this minute to you whether that is a US-supplied equipment or not," Milley told a press conference in Washington when asked about recent events in the Belgorod region.
"But I can say that we have asked Ukrainians to not use US-supplied equipment for direct attacks into Russia," he said.
"We are supporting, supplying and [...] assisting Ukraine, but it is not a direct conflict between the United and Russia," Milley said.
Earlier, the State Department also said that it was checking reports claiming that a group of Ukrainian saboteurs may have used U.S. weapons in the Belgorod region.
On Tuesday, the region's governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced that restrictions imposed on Monday in connection with the group's infiltration had been lifted.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the Ukrainian forces which had crossed into the region were destroyed.
The border territories of the Belgorod region have sporadically come under attack from Ukraine since February 24, 2022. There have been civilian casualties. The region has declared a yellow (high) level of terrorist alert and a state of emergency in 15 settlements along the border.
