Security situation at Zaporozhye NPP remains 'fragile, difficult' - IAEA head

NEW YORK, UN. May 31 (Interfax) - The security situation remains unstable at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said.

While addressing a meeting of the UN Security Council, he described the security situation at the Zaporozhye NPP as fragile and difficult.

Military operations do not cease in the region and may drastically intensify in the near future, Grossi said.

The Zaporozhye NPP has lost external power supply seven times, including once a week ago, Grossi said, adding it was mere luck that the Zaporozhye NPP had no nuclear incidents. He also said he had been working with senior Russian and Ukrainian officials, among others, since his visits to the Zaporozhye NPP, for guaranteeing its security.

The IAEA is monitoring so that nuclear materials are not used for military purposes in Ukraine, Grossi said.
