BELGOROD. May 31 (Interfax) - Shells fired from Ukraine have hit Russia's Belgorod region more than 260 times in the past 24 hours, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram on Wednesday.
There was a large-scale attack on the Shebekino district, which resulted in casualties, the governor said.
"As many as 215 shells have been fired at the Shebekino urban district, including 49 at the city of Shebekino. There were 37 attacks made by multiple rocket launchers and 12 by tube artillery. Regretfully, one person was killed and two were injured in an attack on a border checkpoint. Full medical assistance is being provided. Two buildings and the border checkpoint's guard post have been damaged," he said.
Twenty nine residential buildings in Shebekino had their windows shattered and exteriors damaged by shells, while 20 private houses reported damage to their exteriors, fences and roofs, Gladkov said.
"An administrative building, a shopping mall and a public area were damaged, and a store burned down. Thirty cars were damaged. Four people were hurt in the attack on the city in the morning [on Wednesday]," he said.
Tube artillery fired 47 shells at the village of Novaya Tavolzhanka in the Shebekino urban district. There were no casualties. Twenty three private houses, six cars and a power substation were damaged.
The village of Arkhagenskoye was hit six times. Nine and eight mortar shells were fired at the villages of Terezovka and Stadnikov, respectively. The village of Balki was hit five times, and two drones were downed. No one was hurt, and there was no damage.
The village of Murom was hit by tube artillery 57 times. No one was hurt. An administrative building was damaged.
"The enemy dropped a grenade from a drone in the village. No one was hurt, and no damage was done to houses," the governor said.
Ten mortar shells were fired at Pervomaisky. There were neither casualties nor damage. Three tube artillery rounds were fired at both the villages of Meshkovoye and Grafovka, and 18 shells were fired at the village of Bezlyudovka.
"There were neither casualties nor damage in those communities," Gladkov said.
The Belgorod district has been hit by nine artillery shells over the past 24 hours; all of them fell on the village of Zhuravlyovka. No one was hurt, but a house was damaged.
A mortar was used to strike the village of Stary in the Volokovka district 12 times. No one is hurt, and there was no damage.
"The Graivoron urban district was hit 30 times, 21 mortar shells hit the outskirts of the village of Kozinka and nine mortar shells were fired at a border checkpoint. No one was hurt, but windows were shattered and a wall collapsed in one house. A hostile drone was downed near the village of Antonovka," the governor said.
Artillery twice hit the outskirts of Grafovka village in the Krasnaya Yaruga district. There were no casualties.
"A power transmission line was damaged. It has now been fixed. A hostile kamikaze drone attacked the vicinity of Vyazovoye. No one was hurt, and there was no damage," Gladkov said.
A drone was found among some mown weeds in the Sorokino urban district, he said. The area has been cordoned off and an investigation is in progress. Bomb experts are working at the scene.
