BAKU/YEREVAN. June 1 (Interfax) - The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported Armenian attacks on its positions on the border on Thursday morning.
"Units of the Armenian Armed Forces stationed near Chinarli in the Tovuzgala region fired small arms at Azerbaijani army positions near Asrik Jirdakhan in the Tovuz region [on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border] at 9:10 a.m. on June 1," the ministry said.
Later that day, at around 10 a.m., illegal Armenian armed units fired at Azerbaijani army positions in the Shusha region in Karabakh, it said.
Azerbaijani forces "took appropriate countermeasures," the ministry said.
It also said that Armenian illegal armed units tried to broaden and repair a dirt road to the Shusha and Khojavend regions using engineering equipment, under the guise of agricultural work.
The work was stopped by the rapid response of Azerbaijani forces, the ministry said.
The Armenian Defense Ministry denied the attacks claimed by Baku.
"The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry has released more disinformation. Units of the Armenian Armed Forces did not open fire at Azerbaijani positions on the north-eastern part of the border," the ministry press service said.
The press service for the Defense Ministry of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic also said that Baku's report of attacks was untrue.
"The report of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, according to which units of the Defense Army fired at Azerbaijani positions in the Shusha area at 10 a.m. on June 1, is yet more disinformation. By claiming that engineering work allegedly being done in the Shusha and Martuni regions was terminated, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry is trying to distort reality and thereby justify Azerbaijani units opening fire on agricultural workers," the press service said.
