Russia to complete formation of Moscow, Leningrad military districts in 2023 - official

MOSCOW. June 2 (Interfax) - Russia will form the Leningrad and Moscow military districts and the Azov Naval District by the end of 2023, Russian Armed Forces General Staff Deputy Chief Yevgeny Burdinsky said.

"Organizational structure procedures for forming a combined arms and an air force army, an army corps, the Azov Naval District, five divisions and 26 brigades, and for establishing the Moscow and Leningrad Military District have to be completed in 2023," Burdinsky wrote in an article published in the Defense Ministry's magazine Military Commissariats of Russia.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced plans to set up the Moscow and the Leningrad Military Districts within the Russian Armed Forces at the end of 2022.

Russia's Western Military District had been set up on the basis of the Leningrad and Moscow Military Districts in 2010.
