Chinese rep pledges to continue talks on Ukraine based on Xi's proposals

BEIJING. June 2 (Interfax) - Beijing advocates de-escalating the Ukraine conflict and favors peace, and plans to continue dialogue with all sides based on the settlement proposals of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Chinese Foreign Ministry Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui said on Friday at the end of his European tour.

"The Chinese stance on Ukraine has always been consistent and clear: it seeks to promote peace talks and de-escalation. China is ready to enhance communication and dialogue and play a constructive role in promoting peace talks," Li said at a press briefing in Beijing aired by Chinese television.

Beijing will adhere to Xi's plan for a peace settlement, Li said, adding that China was ready for further dialogue with all parties on the basis of these proposals.

None of the parties to the conflict rejects the idea of dialogue to resolve the situation in Ukraine, he said.

"Perhaps right now all the parties find it quite difficult to bring themselves to the negotiating table," Li said.

"Russia has never been opposed to peace talks, and has supported a political solution to the problems," while the Ukrainian side has also said that "it values and seeks peace," he said.

"My impression is that neither party has shut the door to negotiations," Li said.

"If we really want to end the hostilities, save lives and establish peace, it is important to stop the delivery of [foreign] weapons to the battlefield," Li said. Such deliveries only exacerbate the situation, he said.

Li also welcomed the Ukraine settlement initiatives of African and Latin American countries.
