MOSCOW. June 2 (Interfax) - The police have seized a large amount of weapons and ammunition in the Moscow region, Russian Interior Ministry spokesperson Irina Volk said.
"While verifying current information, the police examined an outbuilding on the offender's property. It contained items structurally similar to firearms, [including] 21 pistols, eight machineguns, 12 submachine guns, two revolvers, and a sniper rifle," Volk told reporters.
According to the police's forensic investigation, some of the items seized are serviceable firearms. The rest are still being examined.
The police also seized ammunition, 31 silencers, various kinds of magazines, basic materials for weapon production and upgrades, and more than 7,000 rounds of various calibers.
The arsenal was uncovered by operatives from the Russian Interior Ministry's Main Criminal Investigation Department, together with their colleagues from the Moscow region and officers of the Federal Security Service's regional branch, Volk said.
A detective from the Shchyolkovo municipal police department's investigative division opened a criminal case on counts of attempted distribution of weapons and firearms.
The suspect, a resident of the Losino-Petrovsky urban district, was taken into custody.
