BISHKEK. June 6 (Interfax) - The Kyrgyz National Security Committee has reported the detention of over 30 people suspected of plotting mass riots and violently seizing power.
"Working to ensure the state's security and protect the constitutional system, the Kyrgyz National Security Committee uncovered and prevented unlawful activities of a group of individuals clandestinely plotting mass protests and major riots in the country to be followed by a violent seizure of power," the committee said in a statement.
A criminal case has been opened, and a set of special investigative procedures sanctioned by court has been carried out, it said.
"The investigation has revealed that over the past year the criminal group has purposefully sought to engage followers and recruit the most disgruntled citizens across the country. A civic activist and chairperson of the Eldik Kenesh [People's Council] party [Roza Nurmatova] is the main organizer and ideological inspirer" of these activities, it said.
"Over a hundred people have been engaged in the criminal group. The information available indicates that substantial funding was expected from abroad in the near future to finance organizational matters and pay rewards to the main functionaries. The conspirators planned to start an active phase of their criminal plans immediately after discontent over any incident began brewing in society," the committee said.
Over 30 leading members of the group were detained and placed at the committee's detention facility on Monday. They have provided testimony confessing to their wrongdoings, it said.
