Former chief of Japarov supporters' campaign among detainees charged with coup plot in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK. June 6 (Interfax) - Eldik Kenesh party leader Roza Nurmatova, detained on suspicion of plotting a coup in Kyrgyzstan, once headed the campaign of President Sadyr Japarov's supporters.

According to public sources, Nurmatova was as a campaign representative of Kyrgyz presidential candidate Kamchybek Tashiyev (who currently serves as the National Security Committee head) in 2011, and headed the campaign of supporters of Japarov and Tashiyev later.

In 2012, Nurmatova headed the campaign of the Ata Zhurt party and spoke in support of Japarov, Tashiyev and Talant Mamytov during the unrest of October 2012, after which they were detained and convicted.

Nurmatova was in charge of the social policy and cultural development department in the Kyrgyz government in 2005. She established the Eldik Kenesh party and called for nationalization of the Kumtor goldmine in 2010.

The Kyrgyz presidential administration has not commented on Nurmatova's detention.

On Monday, the Kyrgyz National Security Committee detained over 30 members of a group plotting unrest and power grab. Investigators identified Nurmatova as the chief organizer and ideologist of the criminal network, which was recruiting followers and disgruntled citizens over the past year.

The committee said that the group was expecting to receive substantial funds from abroad in the near future to fund the rebels.
