ROSTOV-ON-DON. June 6 (Interfax) - The town of Alyoshki in the Kherson region, on the left bank of the Dnieper river, has been almost completely flooded due to the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydropower Plant (HPP)'s infrastructure, the chairman of the regional authorities Andrei Alexeyenko said.
"Right now the situation is most severe in Alyoshki. The town is almost completely flooded. And on the other side there are big forest fires after an artillery strike," Alexeyenko said on Telegram.
He said evacuating the town was only possible using special equipment.
"We are sending all Urals and Kamaz off-road trucks to Alyoshki. The Emergency Situations Ministry's rescue boats are already on their way from Crimea. The situation there is also compounded by communications problems," he said.
In total, more than 100 buses have been gathered in coastal areas to evacuate people. Five thousand places for accommodating evacuees are being readied at safe locations.
