YEREVAN. June 16 (Interfax) - The Armenian Foreign Ministry has expressed its "strong discontent" over an incident on the border between Armenia and the Lachin corridor controlled by Russian peacekeepers.
"In the wake of yesterday's incident involving Russian peacekeepers near the Hakari Bridge [on the border between Armenia and the Lachin corridor linking it with Nagorno-Karabakh], a meeting with the Russian ambassador to Armenia took place at the Armenian Foreign Ministry today, during which Armenia expressed its strong discontent over the incident. It called for all necessary steps to be taken to uncover the circumstances of the incident and correct the situation," the Armenian Foreign Ministry told Interfax.
On Thursday, the Armenian National Security Service reported an attempt by Azerbaijani border guards to enter Armenian territory in the area near the Lachin corridor controlled by Russian peacekeepers and plant an Azerbaijani national flag on the Hakari Bridge.
The Azerbaijani Border Service said in a subsequent statement that Armenian Armed Forces fired on the Lachin border post and injured an Azerbaijani soldier. Baku placed all responsibility for "the armed provocation" on Yerevan.
The Armenian National Security Service said later that an Armenian border guard was injured by fire directed from the Azerbaijani side in the south-eastern part of the country.
On Friday, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Aykhan Hajizada described the allegations that an Azerbaijani flag was raised in Armenian territory on Thursday as "unfounded."
"Yesterday, [...] when the Azerbaijani flag was raised above a bridge [over] Hakari in the sovereign territory of Azerbaijan, servicemen of the Azerbaijani State Border Service were fired upon. Azerbaijan built the bridge recently, so any claims that the flag was raised in Armenian territory are unfounded," Hajizada said on a social network on Friday.
