Yerevan, Washington discuss potential cooperation on nuclear energy - Armenian govt press service

YEREVAN. June 27 (Interfax) - Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan has met with the United States Department of State's senior advisor on international security and non-proliferation Justin Friedman in Yerevan to discuss cooperation on nuclear energy.

"Grigoryan told Friedman about the main challenges to the Armenian energy sector [and] stated the importance of Armenian participation in regional energy programs. The sides discussed possible areas of Armenian-U.S. cooperation in nuclear energy," the Armenian government's press service said.

Previously, the department's coordinator of U.S. assistance to Europe and Eurasia, Maria Longi, said the U.S. was considering building small modular nuclear reactors in Armenia.

Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had said that Yerevan was actively involved in negotiations on constructing a new NPP with several partners, including Russia, the U.S. and third countries.
