Putin notes shipbuilders' significant contribution to govt defense contracts, creating Russia's sea defense

MOSCOW. June 29 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated workers and veterans of the Russian shipbuilding industry on their professional holiday, Shipbuilder's Day.

"Over centuries, the development of shipbuilding has had a major influence on Russia's development as a maritime power, has bolstered its economic and industrial potential, and has enhanced its defensive capability. [...] Shipbuilders' significant contribution to fulfilling government defense contracts and the creation of a sea shield for our fatherland deserves special mention," Putin said in his greetings published on the Kremlin website on Thursday.

The United Shipbuilding Corporation plays an important role in the development of the national fleet, both civilian and military, Putin said.

"I am pleased to say that the present generation of shipbuilders cherishes the traditions of its predecessors, and actively and creatively contributes to achieving key national objectives. To a large extent thanks to your expertise and responsibility, our country builds a broad range of vessels, from nuclear-powered icebreakers to fishing, freight, research and passenger ships. They provide river and sea transportation, including along the Northern Sea Route, and serve as the basis for exploring the oceans' depths and strengthening Russia's position in the Arctic," he said.
