EU to discuss long-term security commitments to Ukraine - media

BRUSSELS. June 29 (Interfax) - European Union leaders are expected to discuss security commitments to Ukraine on Thursday, Euractiv, a European media platform specializing in news from the European Union, said in a report.

"The European Union and member states stand ready to contribute, together with partners, to future security commitments to Ukraine, which will help Ukraine defend itself in the long term, deter acts of aggression and resist destabilization efforts," Euractive said.

According to Euractive, "they will swiftly consider the modalities of such contribution." The outlet did not provide details.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron called on Ukraine's partners to elaborate "security commitments" to Kiev in bilateral and multilateral formats.

"Over the past weeks, France, with its partners of the Quartet (the UK, U.S., Germany) has been working on crafting such security assurances, or commitments, for Kiev," Euractiv said.

It believes that the commitments "could take the form of a long-term pledge of support, including military aid."

Euractiv said EU leaders are expected to clarify the type of "security commitments" at the demand of certain EU members.

"Nobody knows exactly what kind of security commitments, how to provide them, how to finance them?" an EU diplomat said.

"It's like opening Pandora's box," the diplomat said, noting that the EU does not have a clear defense policy framework or a consistent approach to defense policy.

According to Euractiv, the EU is working to expedite the provision of weapons to Ukraine, while encouraging its members to jointly buy supplies, especially ammunition and missiles, and urging industries to ramp up ammo production.

The EU summit will take place on June 29-30.
